InformationThe IU School of Medicine (IUSM) Research Administration
and Finance office oversees all the business operations (budget,
finance, tracking initiatives, purchasing, reporting, proposal
development and grants management) for the Executive Associate Dean
for Research, provides business operations and consultation or
leadership for all of the school-wide cores and centers, and serves
as a central research liaison with IU central offices for the
school.With over 500,000 square feet of research space, IU School
of Medicine received over $500 million in sponsored awards in
calendar year 2023 and ranks 13th in the country in National
Institutes of Health funding among public medical schools.Job
SummaryThe Research Administration and Finance team seeks to hire a
Training Specialist for the IUSM Research Administrator Training
Program. The training curriculum is expected to be a blend of
self-paced individual learning and applied learning. The individual
will report to the Training/Mentoring Program Director and
collaborate across IUSM departments and IU central offices (Office
for Research Administration, Purchasing, Finance) to develop and
administer training and needs. Department-Specific
Responsibilities
- Responsible for developing, maintaining and updating the
training curriculum for the program, and coordinating its delivery
to trainees who are full-time, entry-level research administrators
hired into the program.
- Creates training plans for trainees, develops and administers
assessments to evaluate their performance and progress, and adjusts
plans as needed based on assessment results to help trainees
successfully complete the program.
- Meets regularly with trainees and work with the program
director to address areas of concern.
- Serves as lead training officer for IU School of Medicine
Research Administration by providing advanced assessment of
Research Administration training needs within the School of
Medicine to design and implement training programs.
- Plans and develops training program content and training plans
for program trainees to meet IUSM's research administration
needs.
- Develops training plans and maintains assessment information
for staff within the research administrator trainee program.
- Leads the training initiatives for staff hired into the
research administration training program.
- Leads evaluation of trainees' progress within the program and
adjusts training plans as needed.
- Meets regularly with Director of program to provide updates on
trainee progress and performance evaluations.
- Serves as primary point of contact for IUSM departments on all
research administration training needs.
- Delivers advanced technical training in a variety of formats
(in-person, online, etc.) to staff, faculty, and trainees across
the university system.
- Partners closely with training providers and interfaces with
various Research Administration leaders, directly or as part of
committees/communities, to promote services and ensure that the
training programs offered are meeting university and school
expectations.
- Stays up to date on latest federal, state, local, university
and sponsor policies and procedures to identify training program
needs/opportunities; researches and stays current on education and
training best practices, philosophies, and approaches; makes
recommendations on training program opportunities to leadership and
implements approved changes.
- Remains current on impact of policy changes on the national,
state, and local level.
- Measures, analyzes, and provides reports on attendance,
participant satisfaction, and other metrics on training
programs/initiatives to appropriate leadership.
- Mentors and provides guidance to less senior research
administration staff; may serve as project leader for new
initiatives within research administration as needed. General

- May collaborate with external professional development groups
